DIY String Light Planters Tutorial

Early spring is a great time to start thinking about sprucing up your patio.

Our string light planters are one of our most used DIYs!

Stain & Roller

Optional: Two pieces  of 2x2s wider  than your planters  & a wood screw

Step 1:  Gather Materials

Optional Step:

Stain the posts the desired color. Make sure you use exterior stain.

Add Planter Hooks

Add them to the top of one side of each post. It's easier to add them now before putting them in concrete.

Mark the center of the bottom of your plastic planter.  Optional: we built a wood form out of 2x2s to help hold up the posts.

We marked where the form met the sides so that we could lay the form down and not have to remeasure the center every time.

We tried mixing the concrete and then adding the post...

...but we found it easier to place the post first and then mix the concrete and water in the planter around it.

TIP:

Use a level & the form to set the posts

Allow the concrete to dry before you move on.

The kiddos left their marks before the concrete fully set.

Step 5:  Drill a Drainage Hole

Drill a hole for water drainage on 1-2 sides of the planter, just above the concrete fill line. Otherwise, water build up could rot your roots.

Step 6:  Fill the planter with potting soil & plants!
