Your Interior Design Style

I often hear from people that interior design is just not their thing. They don’t feel like they’re good at it, it’s overwhelming, it’s confusing. Sometimes people say “I know what I like when I see it, I’m just not sure if all of the things I like make sense together.”

Trust me, I totally understand and I often feel all of those same things when I begin to design a space for myself or someone else. One thing, though, that I find to be super helpful is to determine your own interior design style. Once you do that, there are a lot of resources out there to help guide your choices.

But how do you determine your interior design style? Or styles? You can like more than one and you can mix them. I usually say that I am a mixer of styles and that is totally ok. So let’s go through 5 steps to help you determine your style or styles.

If you want a quick rundown, check out my web story HERE!

Step 1

Step 1: Look at Your Own Wardrobe

Do you gravitate towards bold colors and patterns or do you prefer neutral palettes and organic textures? Do you like highly structured pieces or loose, flowing layers? It makes a lot of sense that what you like to put on your body will translate into what you would like to put into your space. Take note of any common themes with colors, textures, the lines and layers.

Step 2: Start Listing Descriptive Adjectives

When I started to design my latest commercial project, I asked my client how she would want her space to feel. I asked for 4-5 adjectives and then I used it to guide my design choices. So to help you determine your interior design style, I suggest that you close your eyes and describe how you want your space to look and feel.

Step 3: Understand the Various Design Styles

Step 4: Search Pinterest

Take what you learned from your clothing, the list of adjectives that describe the space you want, and the design style(s) that you were drawn to while learning about them, and start searching Pinterest. If you find that you wear more modern designs and you want your space to feel bright and clean, search “modern, clean interior design” in Pinterest. Look for common themes and similarities in what you like. It helps to start a board just for this and then scroll through all of your saved posts at once.

TIP: Consider Mixing Styles

Several styles go very well together, so do not be afraid to mix the ones you’re drawn to in your research. Here are two combinations to consider:

Step 5: Take a Quiz

Finally, if after all of your research you still cannot determine your design style, there are many, many quizzes you can take to help you narrow it down. Here are my favorites:

Apartment Therapy

HGTV

Design Society of America

  1. I took a good look at my closet and you are absolutely right… my style is Goodwill! Both my clothing and 90% of my furnishings are from Goodwill.
